I can “reverse this” by multiplying by 5 1 (equivalently, dividing by 5) to get x back. Multiplying by 5 does not lose any information about the original number x. For example, if x is unknown, but I tell you I multiply x by 5 and the result is 10, you can determine what x was just by solving the equation 5x = 10.
